Creating a Calendar for Your Blog

As our group has been evaluating medical support websites, we have noticed how important it is for medical support groups to have a current, updated calendar on their website.   As part of our project we are setting up a blog that demonstrates how to create and use different important tools, such as a calendar.  One of my responsibilities was to figure out how to create a calendar that can be published on a blog or website.  Here is what I learned:

A simple way to do this is to create a Google Calendar and then embed it in the blog or website.

Creating the Calendar
o   1. Go to calendar.google.com.  If you do not already have a Google account you will need to create one.

2. After you have signed into Google Calendars, click on “add” under My Calendars (in the sidebar on the left-hand side).  You can create a new calendar just for your group.
3. You can choose to have the calendar be public (viewable by anyone) or private (viewable only by invitation).
4.  If you have multiple people in your group that need to have access to update the calendar you can add them by clicking on the down arrow next to your calendar under My Calendars and selecting “Calendar Settings”.

5. Then choose the “Share this Calendar” tab.  You can invite people by submitting their email addresses and you can specify the editing rights that you want them to have.

6.  Once you have created your calendar you are ready to start adding events.  You can do this by either clicking “Create Event” in the top left-hand corner or clicking on the calendar on the day and time where you want to add an event.

7.  Add the details for your event.
8. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for as many events as you have.
9. You now have a current calendar that you can easily update and maintain.

Adding Your Calendar to Your Website or Blog
1.  Now it is time to embed your calendar on your blog or website.  Google Calendar makes this easy for you by giving you the HTML that you need to embed your calendar. You can find this by clicking on the down arrow next to your calendar under My Calendars and selecting “Calendar Settings”.

2. Then choose the “Calendar Details” tab.
3. Scroll down and you will see “Embed this Calendar” where you can customize how your calendar will appear.

4. Copy the HTML so you can paste it onto your website or blog.  If you have a blog with blogspot.com you can create a new page for you calendar by going to the Posting Tab on your Dashboard and clicking on “Edit Pages”.  You can create a new page just for your calendar.  When you have created a new page you can copy the HTML for your calendar onto that page.
5. Now you can continue to update your calendar at calendar.google.com and as you update it the one on your website or blog will automatically be updated.

Congratulations! You have now added a calendar to your blog or website! Check out the calendar I created for our group that I posted on a new page on my blog.  I have also embedded the calendar as an example on our group blog.
